29 Life Lessons

Two weeks ago I turned 29. Somehow I still can't quite believe that next year I will hit 30, it's scary but I'm oddly looking forward to it. My 20's haven't been plain sailing, lets face it, who's really are? They're full of ups and downs and finding your feet, I thought all that was supposed to be in your teens but it follows you right through into your twenties, or at least it did for me. This year has definitely been a year of finding myself, I ended a really miserable relationship which took courage, I started my Training Contract and have almost finished my Masters in Law...almost. There are lots of things I have learnt in the past few years, some good, some bad therefore I decided it was quite apt to put together a blog post today featuring 29 Life Lessons I have learnt in 29 years on this planet.

29 Life Lessons

  1. Treat others as you want to be treated. I think this is self explanatory, you know how you want to be treated by others so ensure that you act the same.
  2. Make the most of every day. Life is short, really short therefore ensure that you are able to make the most of every day.
  3. Run your own race. You will get where you need to be in your own time. Life is not a race, we are not in competition with each other and as you get older you do learn this.
  4. Spending time alone does not make you boring. I like my own company and I'm not afraid to admit that, I used to always think I was boring, however it has only been in the last few years that I realised that this was not the case. I still get worried about it now, even at 29 but for the most part I am pretty content.
  5. Be your own best friend. Look after yourself first but not in a selfish way.
  6. Don't compare yourself to others. Comparison is the thief of joy, particularly in the online world. You have to remember that people more often than not only share the good things.
  7. Listen to your body. Your body will tell you when you're tired, listen. Your body will tell you when your excited and nervous, embrace it.
  8. Not all failures are failures.
  9. Always be kind. Always.
  10. A relationship should never make you feel alone. Having only been in a couple of relationships that I would actually class as a relationship, and having met people who made me feel alive I can honestly say that a relationship should not make you feel alone, hurt and miserable. Walk away.
  11. Change is good. You might not think it at the time, however give it just that, time. You may just be pleasantly surprised.
  12. Speak your mind, within reason. Sometimes some things are better left unsaid, however standing up for others and defending yourself is important.
  13. Be honest, always.
  14. You are not always right. Personally I have never had a problem with admitting I am wrong about something, however I know that for others this can be difficult. I think it shows strength of character to admit that you are wrong and to accept it gracefully.
  15. Tell people how you feel. Always talk, tell people how you feel, that you love them or that they upset you. Talking is key and it is extremely underestimated; it can resolve everything.
  16. Being single isn't a negative. Unlike most of the people I know, I have been single for most of my adult life. In truth I haven't minded it so much in recent years, however I really would like to find somebody in the next few years, it would be nice to have someone to share my life with now.
  17. Read, read as much as you can. I used to read so much and lately I am struggling to get back into it. At the start of this year I made a pact with myself to read more, I'm improving but I definitely need to dedicate more time to it instead of browsing my phone over and over again.
  18. Don't change yourself to impress others. It won't work and you will only make yourself miserable.
  19. You will make mistakes, it is how you handle them that matters.
  20. Walk away from relationships which are no good for you. Just do it, take courage. This also applies to friendships, not just lovers.
  21. Always have some savings tucked away for a rainy day. Just in case.
  22. It will all be ok. Trust me.
  23. Trust your instincts.
  24. Take time for yourself, self care is important.
  25. Be patient.
  26. Love is one of the best feelings.
  27. You can't control everything, no matter how much you try.
  28. Your age does not define you. You can do what you want, try new things and travel new places.
  29. Just be yourself, everyone else is taken. It is a cliche but it is true.
